Books on
Japanese Medals
Here is a list of books about Japanese medals. There are other books on world
medals with sections on Japanese medals, but for the moment I am excluding these.
As for books in English, there appears to be only one on Japanese medals and one
on Japanese badges. The latter is titled
In the Name of a Living God: The
Non-Government Badges and Medals of Imperial Japan, Including Police, Fire
Brigade, Red Cross, Veteran, and Patriotic Groups
by Murphy and Ackley. I haven't got
a copy of that, but I hear that it is very good.

This is the most comprehensive source in English.
Lots of basic information with B/W photos of most of
the medals. Some color plates, too.
Essential for the Japanese medal collector.
3rd Edition. Published in 2000.
A Manual of Medals, All about Honors by Kawamura Kosho.
A basic introduction to Japanese medals. Some color plates,
but mostly text (Japanese text). If you cannot read Japanese,
this is not much use.
The information here has some interesting points, and since it
was written by a former chairman of the official Japanese
Award Department, it is authoritative.
3rd Edition. Published in 1988.
An invaluable resource for the Japanese medal collector--even for those
who cannot read Japanese. This has color plates of all the post-2003
medals with their names in English as well as Japanese.

There are also color plates of the making of medals, award documents, and
also of the rarest of rare medals, the Satsuma-Ryukyu medal. (Shown with
only a line drawing in Peterson's book.)

If you can read Japanese, it also has some nice tidbits of information, such
as the revised criteria for receiving Merit medals. I'll try and include all I can
on these web pages.

Published by Japanese Awards & Medals Department.
1st Edition. Published in 2007.
Medals by Togashi Junji.
Basic introduction to medals.
Nice color plates of Japanese and world
medals (mostly the former). Japanese text.
If you cannot read Japanese, you shouldn't
pay too much for this.
Published in 1972.
Secrets of Medals by Ohsono Tomokazu
A treatise on how people get medals,
including scathing remarks about some rich
people who got medals just because they
were rich. Names named!
Japanese text. If you cannot read Japanese,
this is worthless. No plates at all.
Published in 1999.
Japanese Medals, a 100-Year History by Date
Munekatsu.
A history of Japanese medals. Valuable
resource with lots of interesting details.
Japanese text. If you cannot read Japanese,
this is probably not worth buying.
B/W plates, but nothing to cheer about.
Published in 1979.
Orders and Merit Medals Dictionary.
Basic introduction to medals. Although it is called a
dictionary, it doesn't have the entry format.
A few color plates of Japanese medals.
Japanese text. If you cannot read Japanese, you
shouldn't pay too much for this.

Japan Mint 100-Year History
Japanese text documenting the history of the Mint. A
wealth of info about coins, medals, and medallions,
but the text is in Japanese. Some interesting B/W
photos.
