The Ramakrishna Mission
The Ramakrishna Mission is an international religious organization, founded by Sri Ramakrishna's chief
apostle, Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), one of the foremost thinkers and religious leaders of the
present age, who is regarded as 'one of the main moulders of the modern world', in the words of an
eminent Western scholar A. L. Basham.. Sri Ramakrishna is its central source of all power and all activities
going on in his name are regarded as manifestation of his divine mission. Swami Vivekananda was his
foremost disciple.
Sri Ramakrishna
Sri Ramakrishna (1836-1886) was a powerful divine personality who came to this
earth to relieve human
sufferings and sorrows. Through his spiritual realisations he concluded that man as
the embodiment of divinity was himself an object of service. He is one of the unique
divine personalities to have mastered the spiritual disciplines of all major religions,
namely, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam and showed that they all lead to the same
goal
Motto
The R.K.M has been established to give a practical shape to the above ideal and that is why the
motto behind all its activities is; For one's own liberation and for the welfare of the world. Presently,
RKM counts about 150 centers in India and abroad, namely in UK, USA, France, Switzerland, Japan,
Russia, Canada, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Argentina, Australia and Mauritius.
History of the Ramakrishna Mission in Mauritius
Early days
In 1939, a group of sincere devotees in Mauritius requested the Ramakrishna Mission in Kolkata,
India ;to send a spiritual leader to preach Sanatan Dharma on the island. In October 1939, Swami
Ghananandaji arrived and started religious and cultural activities on the Island. The Ramakrishna
Mission, Mauritius branch became a recognized Religious and Charitable Institution of Mauritius by an
Act of Parliament in 1942.
Laying of foundation stone of the Temple on 10 the February1974
All these activities were held in the old buildings one of colonial type and the
other constructed with corrugated iron sheets. The foundation stone of the
present Temple building was laid by His Holiness Swami Ranganathanandaji
Maharaj on the 10 the February 1974. It took two years to complete the temple.
Dedication ceremony of Temple on 5th December 1976.
On the 5 th December 1976, Srimat Swami Vireswaranandaji, then President of the Ramakrishna
Mission, performed the dedication ceremony of the temple. The message of Srimat Swami
Vireswaranandaji on that occasion was" This temple is open to all, to all people to whatever race or
religion, caste or creed they may belong, whatever be their language, whether they are rich or poor,
educated or non-educated, men or women. All can come and worship in this temple;and I have great
pleasure to declare this temple open to one and all on this island of Mauritius".
Dedication ceremony of the marble image of Sri Ramakrishna, April 1981.
The dedication ceremony of the marble image of Sri Ramakrishna in the temple shrine was
performed in April 1981 by His Holiness, Swami Gambhiranandaji Maharaj, who was then Vice
President of the Ramakrishna Mission, India. Swami Gitanandaji and many other senior swamis of the
Mission were also present to grace this auspicious occasion. That took place during the ministration
of Swami Balaramanandaji (1980-1987)
Since 1987 , Swami Krishnarupanandaji, is the present President and Minister in Charge. He took
over the activities of the Ashram after the demise of Swami Balramananda in June 1987. Swamiji
pulled down the old buildings and has constructed the present office and monk quarters and the new
Retreat Centre. A major facelifting was given to the old school building to convert it into the present
Library. The Mission has two Swamis Swami Stavananda and Swami Gauripriyananda .
