Polish Naming Customs

By far the most common naming custom in Poland was to name an infant for a Roman Catholic saint whose feast day occurred within a few days of the infant's birth. In the nineteenth century and earlier, a Pole probably knew his or her saint's day rather than the actual birthday. With this knowledge, one can narrow a search for an ancestor in a baptismal register by looking only around the date corresponding to that person's namesake (on the lists that follow, the saints' days are included). For instance, if your ancestor was named Kazimierz [Casimir], he was probably born around March 4, St. Casimir's Day. For a name like Jan [John], for which there are many commemorations, the dates to search first would be the major celebrations, June 24 (Birth of St. John the Baptist) or Dec 27 (St. John the Apostle). Another Polish custom was to name the infant after one of the godparents. Click here for a case history of Suchomski godparents who were also kin.
